− Our story −

On the road where now stands a homely, renowned pub, there was a cottage belonging to a mother and her son. Her son was her absolute pride and joy, however there came a time when her beloved son became the strong and handsome man she had desired him to be, shipped off every year to protect and serve his country.

The young sailor would return every year for Easter, as a vow to his mother to be able to care for her in her imminent older age. When he arrived home, his mother would have piping hot cross buns made and ready for him. Every year he would arrive at the door smelling the buttery hot cross buns; every year his mum would await with excitement on the other side of the door.

One year the young sailor never came home, but the mother did not lose hope. She still made the hot cross buns whilst patient for his arrival. The following year it was the same disappointing tale, yet hot cross buns were made without a fail. As many years passed by, the heart broken mother continued to bake these sweet buns in honour of her son.

This tradition has been made to stay alive for over a hundred years by successive landlords, and still to this day the custom remains. And the public house is known to be “The Widow’s Son”, where then and now families and supporting sailors would gather for the remembrance of the widow and her son.

The ritual commences with a visit from a Royal Navy Marine will place a hot cross bun into a netted hammock that hangs from the ceiling.

Alongside the sincere and heartfelt anecdotal tradition, the Widow’s Son is currently owned and run by the most fun people who consider themselves as a family; a bond just like the sailor and his mother.

Traditions

Every year on Good Friday, the tradition of the Widow's Buns is celebrated. The legend is that the old widow's only son left to go to sea, possibly during the Napoleonic Wars, and wrote to her explaining that he would be returning home at Easter and to have a nice hot cross bun waiting for him. Sadly, he never returned, but his mother continued to keep a fresh hot cross bun every Good Friday for the rest of her life. After her death, a huge collection of hot cross buns was discovered in a net hanging from the ceiling of her cottage.

Fusion of old & contemporary

Recently taken over by the brains behind Viva Dalston, we are restoring the pub back by stripping back the paint to reveal some of the beautiful original features & giving the inside a modern twist, along with the heritage gorgeous glass, mirrors & ornately designed fixtures.

We've brought some of what we know from our unusual infusion based cocktails, a mixture of delicious bites of food (including our on site minced beef burgers) & merged it with the classic east end boozer, serving some interesting draught beers & bottles.

Our principles

The pub has historically meant so much to the locals who have lived in the area for years & is now becoming like a second home to all the new residents, as Bow is beginning to thrive with many people moving in all the time.
